Haynesville Shale
The Haynesville Shale is a deep, high-pressure dry-gas play straddling the Texas–Louisiana border, with a footprint that reaches into southern Arkansas. After a mid-2010s lull it re-accelerated alongside growing Gulf Coast LNG demand, with footprint gas output peaking at 6.06 Tcf in 2023 and running at 5.54 Tcf in 2025 (best estimate, incl. allocated volumes).
Key numbers
Well counts are shown on two independent bases — rock-evidenced (a formation assignment backed by regulator-reported formation evidence) alongside the total footprint (every well inside the county-based definition). The two overlap heavily, but neither contains the other: rock evidence follows the formation wherever it was drilled, including outside the county lines. Best estimate including allocated and gap-filled volumes; recent periods revise upward as late filings arrive. All member-region frontiers verified past 2025-12 (TX/LA 2026-05, AR 2026-04), so every published year is complete. Figures are aggregates across the full county footprint — a different population from the rock-evidenced cohort above, not a superset of it.
What the data shows
- The Haynesville footprint produced 5.54 Tcf of natural gas and 10.4 million barrels of oil in 2025 (best estimate including allocated volumes).
- Footprint gas production grew from a 2.22 Tcf low in 2016 to a 6.06 Tcf peak in 2023, fell to 5.43 Tcf in 2024, and recovered to 5.54 Tcf in 2025 (best estimate including allocated volumes).
- 13,396 wells carry a rock-evidenced Haynesville formation assignment across three states — 7,450 in Texas, 5,864 in Louisiana and 82 in Arkansas. That count is unscoped by geography: it follows Haynesville/Bossier rock wherever it was drilled, so 2,142 of those wells sit outside the county footprint (mostly conventional vertical Bossier-sand wells in the East Texas Basin). The footprint is a separate geographic lens holding 136,819 wells of all formations and all trajectories across 13 Texas counties, 10 Louisiana parishes and 2 Arkansas counties. Scoped to that footprint, the rock-evidenced cohort is 11,254 wells.
