Data sources & attribution

CommoVision’s datasets are built from the public records of government energy regulators, ministries and statistical agencies across the Americas, plus a small number of licensed open-data sources. Every release is collected from the source that published it. This page credits the sources whose licenses ask for attribution, and the reference data our maps and well attributes are drawn with. The coverage matrix names the source of every published production series.

All data on this site has been cleaned, standardized, reformatted and integrated into CommoVision’s own data model; figures shown here are CommoVision’s presentation of the underlying records, not the source’s own publication. No source listed here endorses CommoVision or this use of its data.

Licensed open-data sources

The datasets in this section are used under Creative Commons licenses. In every case the data has been modified: we cleaned, standardized and integrated it into CommoVision’s own data model, as described above. Each licensor provides its material without warranties, under the disclaimer of warranties in its license, and does not endorse CommoVision. Where a licensor supplies a copyright, license or disclaimer notice with its material, that notice is reproduced in its entry.

Colombia (production). Contains data adapted from “Agencia Nacional de Hidrocarburos - ANH, Bogotá D.C.”: Producción Fiscalizada Crudo Consolidada and Producción Fiscalizada Gas Consolidada, published on datos.gov.co under Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 International (CC BY-SA 4.0).

Colombia (wells). Contains data adapted from the Servicio Geológico Colombiano, Dirección Técnica de Hidrocarburos: Pozos (BIP/EPIS), published under Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International (CC BY 4.0).

Mexico (production). Contains data adapted from the Secretaría de Energía (SENER): the yearly Producción de hidrocarburos datasets (national monthly production by well), published on datos.gob.mx under Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International (CC BY 4.0).

Formation names and stratigraphy. The formation registry that our well and play labels resolve to is seeded from, and adapted from, the stratigraphic lexicon of Macrostrat (University of Wisconsin–Madison), macrostrat.org, licensed under Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International (CC BY 4.0). Third-party benchmark series

North America rig counts. Source: Baker Hughes rig count (rigcount.bakerhughes.com). We serve our own derived series and rollups, never Baker Hughes’s files. Baker Hughes is not affiliated with and does not endorse CommoVision.

Government and statistical sources

Production, well, permit and completion records come from the official regulators and ministries of each covered jurisdiction, among them the US state oil & gas agencies, state geological surveys and state tax authorities, BSEE and BOEM (US federal offshore), the Canadian provincial regulators and Petrinex, Brazil’s ANP, Argentina’s Secretaría de Energía, Mexico’s CNH, Ecuador’s ARCERNNR, and Guyana’s Ministry of Natural Resources. These are public records; we credit each series’ source in the coverage matrix.

Alberta. Alberta production before 2022 is derived from the AER Well Production Data File, which is available directly from the Alberta Energy Regulator (aer.ca). Free AER datasets are reproduced with the AER identified as the source. Alberta monthly volumetric data from 2022 on come from Petrinex: Government of Alberta / Petrinex, Crown copyright acknowledged.

Country-level series for jurisdictions without published well- or field-grain data include data from the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA), International Energy Statistics (public domain; retrieval dates preserved in our provenance metadata).

Well location and status data for Saskatchewan come from the Saskatchewan Ministry of Energy and Resources, Petroleum and Natural Gas Division, via the Government of Saskatchewan GIS services. Saskatchewan production volumes are the same Ministry’s data, published through Petrinex.

Hydraulic fracturing records (water, proppant and chemical disclosures) include data from FracFocus, the chemical disclosure registry of the Ground Water Protection Council.

Elevation reference data

Copernicus DEM. Well elevation attributes for Alaska and for regions outside the United States are chiefly produced using Copernicus WorldDEM-30 © DLR e.V. 2010-2014 and © Airbus Defence and Space GmbH 2014-2018 provided under COPERNICUS by the European Union and ESA; all rights reserved. The organisations in charge of the Copernicus programme by law or by delegation do not incur any liability for any use of the Copernicus WorldDEM-30. The European Union, ESA, DLR and Airbus Defence and Space do not endorse CommoVision.

United States. Well elevation attributes in the United States outside Alaska, and for any well a US federal elevation tile covers, are derived from the U.S. Geological Survey 3DEP seamless elevation model (The National Map; public domain). Credit: U.S. Geological Survey.
